How many miles are between Maine and Texas? Hell, how long would it take her just to get out of this state? This world is vast and there are dangers around every bend, but staying in Cascaro no longer seems like an option. She has stopped looking because she knows that wherever he has gone, she will not find him.
That day on the mountain side. The day whenever he rescued her, saved her from wandering in the wrong direction, it must have all been a dream because a few days later he disappeared without a trace. Only a few more days together and he was gone. She was left alone in the city, a place stranger to her than the mountainside and she has no idea which way is up because she does not know the ways of tall buildings and stone sidewalks. She understands nature and open fields and sheep, but there are no sheep here. There is nothing else but dogs and assorted other small animals and yet, she feels incredibly alone.
Even now as she sits on the edge of the dock, Sawyer wonders where he could have gone. She cannot escape the thought that it had to be something terrible, because he would not leave without telling her. Wicker was not the type. But truly, does she know him well enough to make such accusations? She has no idea about his character and who he is and where he came from. All she knows is that he captured her heart on that mountain and he left it in the city, in a gutter to be washed away with all of the other trash. And now.. Now she stares out at the ocean with great intentions to go back to Texas, but how will she make the trip alone? How will she be able to know exactly where she is going?
But then again, the seasons have changed. Spring has returned which means that her human will be coming back to the mountainside for another hunting trip. Perhaps it is best if she just awaits his arrival. She can go back to the cabin, stay there, maybe find a way inside and sleep there. She knows how to hunt and she could easily survive. She already has survived this long without him, she could manage another couple of months and whenever he gets back, oh won’t he be so surprised!?
What if he has another dog already?
Sawyer feels her heart drop and she grits her teeth, not wanting to think about the possibility that already he would have found a new dog, though she cannot say that she would be horribly upset at one of her siblings coming up here. Her only hope is that they do not get as lost as she did. “No way but up here, girl,” she whispers to herself, her voice being carried away on the wind coming in from the ocean. She looks to the sky and narrows her eyes. The sun is rising on the horizon and she notices the reds and oranges and pinks and Sawyer’s nostrils flare. There is going to be a storm, should that old saying ever hold true. “Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning.” She huffs at the saying, but she clings to it because that conversation between her human and his son rings clear in her head.. And oh she just wants to go home.
