The weather had tapered off enough that getting out to clean was not as big of a deal as it would have been during the winter. As snow melted it revealed more of what had broken during their hurricane season. Tree limbs were strewn like broken figurines with upended miscellaneous objects to be cleared away.
It was a task that had been delegated to the members of Kekoa. Mayella had joined in without prompting from her father. As always, she was more than a little interested in helping the members of Kekoa. They were her family as much as her own was. Toil under a cool light was pleasant rather than arduous, especially given her current partner.
Mayella had blossomed into quite the young lady. As she had grown she had filled out beautifully with a slender muzzle, white like her father, and vaguely apricot colored ears. She had inherited her father’s thicker coat, which was fit for blowing at the beginning of the spring. When she was outside she would pluck at the tufts of hair until they came free, blowing like little puffs through the wind.
Spring did her a great favor, the light highlighting some of the faint apricot coloring on her back while bent for an object just nearby. Clutching it with her jaws she pulled the awkward tree branch away before rejoining the effort. Coming abreast to Leander she pressed her shoulder against his, giving him a cheeky grin. “We’re really branching out in this effort, aren’t we?” Mayella’s wry humor had her nearly laughing already, only just managing to maintain a straight face.
Ducking her head to compose herself, she met his gaze once more with a forepaw going against another limb that had fallen during the course of the storm. Resisting the urge to follow up her terrible joke with another one equally terrible she smiled as though nothing had happened. “Thanks for helping, I willow you one for today.” Mayella’s resistance failed, laughter nearly ceasing her sentence but she managed all the same while desperately trying to keep herself from smiling too wide.
