"I hate winter," came the grumble, which permeated moodily out over the docks and down to the sea. The black dog cut a solitary figure against the backdrop of the ocean — his gaze hard and indurate; he did not care for the wind as it sliced between his silk, albeit muddied, coat nor for the snow that had begun to fall, again. Remnants of the blizzard that had hit Cascaro lingered still, and with this new coating of flakes Uri wouldn't be surprised if the land would soon be painted in white. He couldn't quite suppress the shiver that gripped his svelte frame, and memories of summer's warm caress seemed a lifetime away. What with the increasing snowfall, Uriah knew it would be wise to start seeking shelter, but there was something therapeutic about watching the waves crashing against the creaking foundations of the wooden construction, as unsafe as it may have been. It captivated him.
But as a second ferocious gale buffeted against his body, Uri knew the weather would not give him a second chance to seek sanctuary from the freezing cold. Pushing into a swift trot the male turned back on himself and made his way back toward the beach boardwalk. All around were reminders of the past: he recalled how his owners had brought he and his mother down here often. Happy times, easy times — gone, forever. A wistful sigh slipped between his jaws, whirling away into the stormy sky, and for a moment Uriah paused as if watching it's ascent into the heavens. Was Ma watching? Was she waiting for him? A growl grew in the depths of his throat: this was foolish! She's dead, get the fuck over it already.
He moved onward through the snow, reaching the end of the docks only to detect something that brought him to a dead halt: the strong scent of a nearby stranger.
