((Open thread, with an experimental new character.. just couldn't resist.))
He strode casually through the forest, eyes raised mostly upward save for the occasional glance down at his feet just to make sure that he did not trip over something. His walk was one of confidence, ignorance too perhaps, as he paid little heed to his surroundings or anything else for that matter. Gordon had realized the oncoming winter, but didn't particularly care, other than the fact that he had now officially turned three years old. "That's right." He said to himself, a happy look written across his face. He felt good today, in spite of the fact that he had been walking nearly non-stop for the past several days. Where was he? He didn't recognize any of this land. But that was nothing new. Oh, and then there was the wind. Cold wind, and always at night too. He hated that.
"Nothin' out here anyway," the dog muttered again. He did not falter once in his stride. Not until he nearly walked straight off a cliff. Only barely managing to halt himself, brown irises peered down over the edge, watching as a few rocks and debris tumbled down. Down. Down.. splash. Into the water below. "Well.. shit." He cursed, a small laugh escaping him. "Let's just.. back away calmly like we didn't almost kill ourselves there." Stepping back until he was a safe distance away, he could not help but remain curious about this construct.
It was the first interesting thing he had come across in.. nine days. Yes. He had been walking for nine days now. So naturally, he felt the need to investigate. Naturally. The first thing he noted was that it appeared man-made. Gordon had always been intrigued by human structures, and by humans themselves. But he had not seen any of them for some time now, either. "I wonder what's down there? What do you think?" Turning his head as if he were asking that question to another, he began making his way around the quarry, looking for a way down.
"Some shelter, at least." Gordon answered his own inquiry. "Maybe something to eat? Or perhaps a - Ahh yes, here we go!" Catching site of an obviously human made construct, Gordon hurried over. It was a tunnel, or shaft of some sort, leading down into the quarry. Probably what the humans had used to get up and down. But he found it hard to imagine them wanting to climb all that way each and every time. For a second he studied it, noting several spaces he could use to potentially navigate his way down. That was all he needed to get started.
Clambering down into the shaft, Gordon was at first mystified by some strange sounds, but then realized it was just the echo of his own movement. "Echo!" He said aloud, stopping his decent briefly just to listen to the word resonate off the walls and eventually fade away. He was about three quarters of the way down when he found it, a nice little alcove which would be perfect shelter for the night. Pleased with himself for having been so prepared to weather another cold night - for once, he set about brushing loose dirt and stuff out of the cave. It was getting darker, with sunlight fading and causing many long shadows to be cast around him. But this place would be a good place to stay for a night. He could explore it further in the morning.
As much as he wanted to keep going, even Gordon realized how dangerous it might be to go stumbling about down in these tombs in the dark. He really didn't need to get hurt or - "SPIDER!" The slow movement from the arachnid caught the attention of his keen eye. It was cold, likely burrowed here for the winter. But that didn't stop him from squashing it under foot, his face wrinkling up in disgust. "Yuck." He complained, shaking his paw and rubbing it against a nearby wall to clean off any of the dead creatures remnants. He then thoroughly looked over the area, just to be sure there were no more spiders, before he sat down.
Gazing at the place around him, he smiled. "I claim this.. cliff spot. And none shall take it from me!" Gordon declared proudly into the night. Yes. This was his spot. At least for now.
