The air was sticky with heat and for once, she felt it.
Or she could imagine she did. Whatever Thackery had given her that day made the inside of her head feel heavy and hot. Riley felt increasingly lethargic and nauseous, so she decided to retreat to the springs for the rest of the afternoon. No one would miss her, likely, especially not her father. In the recent shifts she had been left uninvolved, maybe for her persistence in family matters. If that was her parent's way of punishing his daughter or protecting her. What she despised more than Grimshaw's spiting was coddling and she would deal with him later.
For now she could do no more than lay at the side of the pool in the shade, her too skinny body stretched out on her back, emphasizing the outline of her ribs. Riley's head and a paw lolled over the edge so it would catch the stray trickle of water from the falls. It was cool on her forehead, refreshing, as she closed her eyes. It might have been blissful if Riley wasn't concentrating so hard on keeping whatever was left in her stomach down. She had retched through the better part of the morning under the influence of what the Doc had given her. Riley would certainly not be recommending it, apart from to his enemies. Her stomach felt uncomfortable, like it was twisting and so she idly wondered how much it hurt. That she couldn't help Thackery with, as willing a lab rat she was.
The girl released a heavy sigh and shifted herself an inch closer to the proximity of the cascading water. It formed a stream from where it landed on her temple into rivulets down her muzzle, trickling from the tip of her nose to complete its detour into the pool.
