Tryna break the chains but the chains only break me,
Stoli knew that something eventually had to give between him and his partner. He could no longer stand going on patrols, day after day, knowing that she would rather not be near him. They had used to much precious time tearing down each other’s walls, only for Lyall to throw hers back up without fair warning. Taken off guard, Stoli was unprepared for it. Running into it head on, time after time, Stoli had only come away bruised and battered. And, unfortunately, he was no closer to Lyall now than he had been six months ago.
With a heavy heart, he ascended the steps of the mansion, his limbs heavy and his body feeling drained. Darkness had long ago come across Cascaro, but the full moon cast a cool glow across the building and trickled into the windows just enough to allow visibility inside. He followed the halls until he reached another staircase, being careful to avoid any other dogs that may want conversation from him. He didn’t feel like speaking to anyone else, especially when he had such brooding thoughts on his mind. Stoli knew the outcome to any small talk would only be further frustration on his part.
He moved up the staircase, the wood creaking loudly beneath him as he went. Scowling, he tried to keep a softer approach to the climb, but in the end the mansion seemed intent on announcing his presence. Walking down the hall, he came to the last door on the left and nudged it open with his nose. The moon glow washed her in a pale coat of light, casting a shadow across most of her features. He swallowed hard, suddenly become bashful. He wasn’t sure what he could say, if anything, that could bring her back to him.
He felt like an intruder, like he shouldn’t be here, but with a bold step forward he entered further, words rolling off his tongue softly. “We can’t go on like this, Lyall.”
