TEARS STAIN THE MAUSOLEUM FLOOR

The usual fanfare was tossed to the crowd like a slab of meat for the wolves. They fought to reach and tear it apart, with pushing bodies and shouts that lashed like teeth. Grimshaw watched them, maybe endeared or maybe disdained for all he showed the underworld on his dark face and darker eyes. Countless faces were reduced to a single, nameless beast that demanded meat for the machine to churn out empty glory and ringing defeats, enough to go around. It was time to feed the masses.

Grimshaw would be a hypocrite to not participate in his own trade and would open the night with first blood - be it his, or his opponent's. It was a simple thrill for anyone to partake in. Even he wasn't immune to the buzzing nerves that lit up the room with electricity, but he knew it was all artificial. But so long as you thought less, asked less, it could have been real. Muscles worked seamlessly beneath short hairs as he leaned over the edge of the ring, his nails teasing its edge before he propelled down. The howling chorus stifled the thud of his paws, his toes pushing up a spray of dirt as he straightened from the hunch of his landing.

The large mutt raised his head high to survey a rabid audience before it drooped low, ears flattening along his skull. If they'd been waiting for him to say something, they'd be disappointed. Grimshaw savoured the power to feed the beast he'd raised with his son or deny it sustenance until it rolled over and put its paws up high. As he took to a tight prowl along the ring's center, stretching out his legs in limber steps like the lion awaiting a gladiator, the crowd hushed with anticipation for it to begin.
