Finally. Finally, she was free. It was the first day of spring, or at least so she had heard, and that was enough. Never mind that it was still cold, and that snow was still on the ground. It was spring, and it meant that Mhera could finally escape from that terrible room she had spent those long months in.
That didn't mean she was stupid, of course. She wasn't striking out for the city on her first jaunt out. Her mother probably would have, and that gave the collie mutt a bit of a chuckle. No, she was being smart about it. The stables were far enough. Completely separate from the mansion, but still within shouting distance if she managed to fuck her leg up again. So far so good, though. She had shuffled down the stairs, slowly and secretly scared shitless that her leg would snap in half at any moment. To be honest, she still felt that way. But she had put the cowardice of her youth behind her and now she had to keep moving. While still sore, her leg seemed to hold her weight just fine and her head only mildly ached at the sunlight. All in all, very promising.
Mhera had gotten all the way to the second stable, meandering aimlessly and doing nothing more than enjoying her freedom. There was no goal today, no place she had to go and nothing she had to do. Tomorrow that would start. Tomorrow she'd pester Jones and Motley into teaching her, and start making plans to see who else in the city she could learn from. There were already whisperings of a doctor in the fighting arena and a wild woman in the woods, and both were worth checking out. Thorne would kill her for going to the arena, but his wrath would have to be dealt with. She was more worried about the mountain woman, honestly. As inviting as the forest was last fall, the mutt was thoroughly sick of it now.
Mhera stopped for a moment near the broken door to a stall and sat down. It seemed that her that the agility and ability she had gained from her traveling was not coming back quickly after being on her ass for three months. It made sense, but she hated being out of breath from just walking around. She wanted to walk everywhere! No more sitting down, not for awhile. "Fuck it." Heaving herself up, she resolved to make it to the paddock at least. Once there, who knew? It all depended on how she felt when she got there. Hell, that might not even matter. She was going, and there was no one around to stop her.
