MY MEN CANNOT GET OUT OF
BEING PULLED INTO THE EARTH
After ruthless persistence, Grimshaw had finally tasked her with a job. It wasn't relevant to the concerns she hailed him with whenever she saw her pa, but it was something. Whenever he saw his sharp daughter coming along, he would sigh and cast his eyes away with barely concealed impatience. But Riley Noire never relented. "I'm doin' th'best I can, kid," he would say. And he was; affluent businesses, new friends, he was taking their family up. But his best wasn't good enough and so she told him.
"What else do ya want me to do, Riley? What would ya have me do?! Ya can't get blood out of a fuckin' stone." He would snap with exasperation that rolled off his daughter like water. "At least I'll try, pa." The young female would eye him coldly, and it would remind him of Galvani. Her eyes weren't silver but there was metal in her dark eyes all the same, just like blood.
He gave her a list of names to pursue for a statement of their allegiance, to buy himself some time from his daughter. Riley would let him have it for now; it would be some progress, if nothing else. The young Agilulfo was scouring the east of Cascaro, not because she believed any distant relatives would be there but because it would be a breath of fresh air from the city. Even their kind needed a retreat. Riley Noire could appreciate the silence as she walked alongside the tracks that would lead her towards the station. There was a dry rustle of wind through dead grass as she raised her black and white muzzle to look up at one of the stationary train, its side masked in years of filth.
A dog could live comfortably within just one of those carts, just as they could the station itself. Riley turned her head in its direction, wondering where to begin first.MYSELF CANNOT GET OUT OF
