The idea of going down into the sewers was not pleasing to her. At all. God only knew what could be down there. The only consolation was that she wouldn’t be going alone. That was a relief. She couldn’t imagine what it would be like to go down into the sewers by herself. It would be like the beginning of a horror story, and she had had enough horrible encounters to last her a lifetime. But she didn’t have to fear anything happening since she wouldn’t be by herself. And while she didn’t like the idea of being in the sewers, their mission was an order from Brighid, and who was she to disobey an order?
Besides, she could see the reasoning behind the decision. If the pack was ever attacked, they would need to have some sort of escape route. But she prayed that they would never need to use it. She had already been through one invasion with a pack, and did not have any desire to go through another one. And it was better to be safe than sorry, so she shut her mouth and did as Brighid said. Not that she was ever willing to go against Brighid’s orders. She wasn’t that stupid, nor was she like her daughter. She was a follower, not a leader or a rebel. Maybe in her youth if she had a normal childhood, she might be a bit rebellious. But growing up in the environment that she had, she learned that you don’t disobey orders or go against the status quo for any reason. She had been a pet, and the humans were the leaders. They were the ones who had the power to put her to sleep if they so chose to. And she was glad that she was away from them. She could barely remember what it was like to be a pet, and she had no desire to go back.
She approached the sewers, old fears starting to come back. This was the place where Hatter had tried to eat her, or whatever else his intention had been. She had been lucky that day that there was another dog who was willing to stop him. If he hadn’t, well, then she wouldn’t be here. But she forced those fears down. That had been, what, two years ago? She hadn’t seen him again since, and she was glad. Besides, even if he did appear here again, she wasn’t alone. That made her feel better. The less she focused on the past, the better. They had a mission to do, and she would see it through.
She paused at the mouth of the sewers, looking at her companions. If any of them wanted to take the lead and go first, they were more than welcome to. If they didn’t, well, it would be up to her. She waited a couple of minutes to see what they would do. She didn’t really know either of them, though she did know that Jasper was Brighid’s son, and that was the end of it. At least this might give the three of them a chance to get to know one another. Because what better way to bond than to go trekking through a sewer? If neither of them stepped forward, she would start walking again, her paws cautious stepping forward. She had no idea what to expect, but she hoped that there wouldn’t be any surprises.
