This was it. Layla was walking to the Sioux Forest, hoping that the other female, Church, didn't trail too far behind her. This was where she was going to test the competence of her soon to be comrade through a hunt. She didn't yet know exactly what was out there in terms of animals, since she had focused more on getting to the forest from the beach, than really scouting out prey to hunt for. But what if there weren't any, lurking about in the woods where she used to live? It had happened before, after a likewise storm, all the animals would retreat into wherever they could, and their scent became obscured with the heavy smell of storm. Eventually they would come back, but Layla had suffered many months because of the storms' impact. It was one of the reasons she had been lean compared to a typical Leonberger. The second reason, she had muscle as compared to most of the groomed, pampered dogs rolling around in their own blubber, only getting fatter and decreasing their already short lifespan. Layla dd not want to allow for herself to become like that, like her old Grandfather Amos had been. That was why she was able to survive her abandonment, why she still stood here, perseverance and a will that could not be tamed. She let a deep breath of air expand her lungs, and closed her eyes as her chest heaved.
Layla opened her eyes abruptly, remembering that she actually needed to scent out the prey, or else she'd have to take an alternate approach to testing Church. She took in another deep breath, this time through her nose, letting all of the hints of scent waft their way in, until she found one strong enough and close enough smelling that they could pursue it. It smelled rank, dirty, but alive, so she could only guess it was a wild boar. Those things could be monstrously large and Layla decided that it would be best if she did not make her future cohort hunt it down alone. She turned to the female, and gave the orders.
" Smell the air. That stink is a wild boar, roughly..that direction" she pointed with her paw toward the general direction of the rank and pungent odor. " I'll go left, you go right. We go straight until the smell gets stronger, then follow your instinct. This is your test. We're bringing home the bacon for Tempest."
Layla turned her body toward the scent's direction, and strode to the left of it, giving it a wide girth, before starting off stalking through the brush.
