Turn back.The thought was ever present in the Mastiff’s mind becoming louder and louder as he made his way first towards the arena entrance and then when he made his way to the basement where the fighting took place. Already he could hear the roar of the crowd, feel the excitement in the air, it was electric and charged even one as nervous as he with adrenaline. Already Ren was anticipating the fight, his muscles were relaxing, his gate becoming smoother, more predatory. It had been too long since he had been around anything as violent as this and despite his good nature, Ren looked forward to what was going to happen.

Descending the stairs to the basement, the fur along his nape began to bristle slightly. The brindle dog was engulfed by the crowd, nudged this way and that, but he made steady progress to the rings edge. The rush was already beginning for Renier, but it couldn’t end just by sitting ringside, no, it would end in the ring with his energy spent and likely several wounds to lick. He wouldn’t be the only one. The canines in the ring now were spent, they were exhausted but still they continued. Until the Rottweiler mix had the other pinned down. The crowd roared louder, counting upwards until they reached ten. With that the victor released the loser, both left the cage.

Eager for his own turn, Renier pushed and nudged his way to the cage entrance, he was given a once over before the canine gave a toothy grin and let him pass. He entered quietly, modestly, his eyes soaking in the view as he took his place in the center of the ring, waiting for the challenger. The crowd, though not nearly as loud as before seemed as eager as he, the electric atmosphere continued to charge him, he did everything he could not to tighten his anxious muscles.

The basement was teeming, as usual. It was dimly lit, seedy and hot with bodies. The dogs were generally unsavory, loud and crass. They barged into one another with the intention of starting something or the knowledge they could disappear into the crowd that gathered to watch the bloodsport. It was a filthy atmosphere, but Dominic loved it because it was more alive than any place he knew. Even if it was a filthy, vicarious life to lead.

He fought to the front with disregard to the complaints, boosting himself up onto the fence with his forepaws to catch the end of the fight. The dog leaned in, his spine poking up from his rusty coat. His shouts of encouragement or discouragement was drowned amongst the rest until it became one as the crowd counted to ten. "Walk it off boyo, walk it off!" Dominic jauntily offered his "consolation" to the shamed loser with a widely grinning mouth, before watching the next enter with eyes that were as bright as they were sharp. While the crowd sized the new contender up the Shepherd mix was pushing off to enter the ring.

His entrance was heralded with more derisive laughter and comments than what was usually warranted. Dominic hardly appeared to be in fighting condition. Despite weeks of recovery from the brink of death he was gaunt looking - the line from his chest to his stomach receded sharply, his hip bones clearly visible beneath his still dull coat. But there was nothing wrong with his spirit as he strode confidently forward and circled along the edge while his opponent stood in the center. Dominic may have been taller, but even if he was filled out the Mastiff mix would still Before addressing them he raised his eyes toward the crowd to answer their jeers. "Oh fuck off, you ugly motherfuckas just wish ya looked as good as me!" He cheerfully shouted back at them before fixating on Renier with a toothy grin.

"Show me what ya got, big fella," he teased as though he was in the position to. But the jolly attitude was soon shed when he burst suddenly for the brindle dog, his black and scarred lips wrinkling towards the bridge of his muzzle Dominic had all kinds of fire to him and it was one flame in particular that licked towards Renier, red and furious. It burned the hottest of them all.

His paws skidded in the dirt as he thrust his weight in a new direction, as though he meant to bypass the male instead of meeting him. But Dominic would twist up off his paws back into his opponent when they were (ideally) shoulder to shoulder before such could happen. His fore leg reached to sling along his back while his snarling jaws arched for Renier's side with the intention of landing a dragging blow.

For a moment, there was no one that entered and as he scanned the crowd he wondered why no one had stepped forward. Then he saw it, the parting of bodies to let someone through. Slowly, Renier shifted to face the entrance as the challenger came in, Ren’s ears pulled back and his head cocked to the side in confusion. They were going to let that fight him? Even the crowd disapproved, they threw insults at the dog but he only spat back at them. The gaunt canine was confident as he circled the arena, Ren following in a much tighter circle, keeping his eye on his new adversary.

The male seemed intent to fight and though there was hardly any honor in fighting a dog so weak, he would not deny his challenger what he obviously wanted. The dog slung a teasing jest in his direction and Renier grinned, muscles tensing a bit as he slid into a defensive position. Postured between standing tall and a crouch he waited as the speckled mongrel rushed forward. Just like that the atmosphere of the crowd changed, going from laughs to roars in a blink of an eye. His sickly adversary altered his charge, veering to the side to bypass him, Ren was confused at first, but by the time he realized what was going to happen- it was too late. He felt the paw on his back and his reaction was instantaneous. He jerked away, just as the canine’s teeth sunk into his flank and dragged down. Snarling Ren twisted in on himself, his hind legs buckling in an invitation for the dog to move closer.

Eagerly, Ren’s free paw reached for the speckled male, wishing to pull him forward so that his teeth could sink into the neck or shoulder region. Already, the floor was tainted with first blood, his blood, it ran hot down his leg, the muscles trembling at the shocking pain. It had been a long time since he had felt any pain on the back half of his body and he didn’t like it. The Mastiff mix did not plan on letting go once he had hold of Dominic, no, this was only the first part of his attack, but he needed Dominic in the right position to finish it. He would not lose this fight, not to a weak dog.

His opponent had waited to receive him, like a rock waited for the water to break across its surface. But he was disappointed. Dom's rash decision to fight in a poor condition was questionable, but his mind was clear for the battle itself. He'd never sustain a direct attack and would have to rely on wits with the lack of brawn. Targeting his hindquarters would challenge his flexibility and speed, both of which the underweight dog had retained. But as soon as either were compromised, it would be his loss.

Dominic curled his nails at the thick curve of his Mastiff's back, searching for ridge along the center to fix them against for a second of security. His teeth successfully tore down the well muscled haunch and the first blood was his. It tasted sweeter than anything he knew. When their fight was over Dominic would think no less of his adversary, though potentially more, but that was the nature of the ring. It was its baseless savagery that Dominic needed, or else the anger would fester uselessly inside him, growing bigger until it burst. That was the difference between him and his father and the likeness with his great grandfather; he would control it.

The thick dog curled in and the dog's paw dragged down from Renier's side, despite trying to keep up with the motion a strain in his leg made the muscle tremble. Dropping down the rusty dog twisted so he could face the oncoming attack. A paw reached for him, then teeth.

As they came for the skinny male, Dominic thrust his fore legs forward at his shoulder and dove his jaws in the direction of Renier's head in a bludgeon of teeth. Though he couldn't stop the Mastiff, Dom could aim to  push himself away from him and reverse with some quick steps, before the other had gained a firm hold to bring him down. That hadn't spared him from loose skin dragging through teeth to snap back against bone in bloodied streaks. Without muscle to line the shoulder it ached much deeper than it should have, but it felt grimly satisfying.

Pain exploded down his side and down his haunches at the flexing of muscles so he could arch towards the shoulder of his adversary. It was fire on his skin and lava in his muscles and veins; it burned through him, causing a painful throb to the torn flesh. The pulse mirrored the beat of his pumping heart each thump sent another jolt of pain through his body forcing his attention away from what he was doing and onto the wounds he had already accrued. Immediately, he regret his decision to be in the ring, to come down into the basement and fight. This was not the way to get back into fighting shape; he needed to spar with Amanzi more yes that was all. He needed more spars. Yet, even as he thought this, his mind went back to their last spar and how he had turned on her, nearly hurt her. He couldn’t just spar.

Canines met flesh, grated along what felt like bone, a feeling Ren had never felt before and it perplexed as much as it did excite him. The Mastiff knew he had missed his target, his teeth should have snagged on the shoulder blade, not slid. Frustrated, his jaws loosened so he could adjust his feeble hold to one more certain. He didn’t get the chance. Flesh was pulled from his jaws, even as he snapped after it, it was then that he became aware of the paws planted firmly on his shoulder. Teeth came for his face and he ducked his head, arching his neck and forcing his haunches to hold his weight as he stood.

The Mastiff mutt felt the pressure at the scruff of his neck and then the pain of teeth piercing flesh. Snarling, his own jaws reached out for the elbow of his opponent, hoping to grasp it tight and then yank upward to throw the beast off balance and ultimately fall. The action caused the scruff of his neck to stretch, pulling the edges of his wound; they burned in protest, trying to distract him. Not this time, he shoved the pain away, denying it. His weight leaned towards his adversary, in case had managed to get the elbow of his opponent. He was trying to secure the fall of the spotted canine, hoping to further pitch the emaciated dog off balance. To send him falling back so that Ren could pin him.

A moment's reprieve was followed by a more permanent upheaval. Teeth snagged his elbow in a grip that twisted him up, making the fighter feel suddenly like a ragdoll. He'd not been simple to catch but once caught, there was no resistance Dominic could give that would spare him from the fall.

Not that he didn't try, striking his muzzle towards Renier like a angered snake. His teeth clipped the air before they were jarred into parting as he hit the dirt. The impact spread through the whole of Dominic, made all the more severe by underused muscles. The rusty dog bit his tongue in the process but not hard enough to draw blood. It throbbed as the skinny male went to push up before the Mastiff mix crushed him to the floor, pinning him with ease.

The roar of the count began and the boy struggled for the first few seconds, to test if there was room to change his circumstances by landing a sensitive kick at Renier's gut or wriggling free. Neither would work and, accepting that he was without a doubt down, Dominic went limp and flopped his skull back against the sand with an exaggerated sigh, aiming his muzzle up to the crowd as they reached "six". Dominic sucked the breath back in, his gaunt chest rising and sinking quickly with exertion. The thrill was fading so the caustic ebb of his injuries could take charge. He was utterly worn by his defeat but satisfied, a vague grin lingering on his black and scarred muzzle.

When ten seconds had passed and the strangers took up their jabs and praises once more, Dominic stretched his neck forward to look up at the Mastiff male. "Well, it was close right?" He jested, bright eyes were full of mischief as he clearly harboured no ill feeling towards his opponent. The Agilulfo slapped his paw at Renier's leg. "Off ya get, big fella! I've been thoroughly disgraced." Once the heavy dog had moved away, Dominic rolled up and left the ring, not without a final grin at Renier and the crowd that booed him off, doing his best to not look too visibly hindered by his wounds.
