"Little itty bitty things outside my window, I wonder what you could be. How is it that you’ve come to Wonderland? How did you come to find me? Tell me, little momwraths outgrabe, can you point me to the Jabberwock? Can you tell me where to find the Bandersnatch with teeth that gnash and claws that swipe? Oh tell me, little bitty thing outside my window, where can I be going? But does it matter in this world, which way I do go? I do not have a destination in mind.. so I suppose it does not matter. After all, I cannot go among normal people.. not that there is a single normal person here in Wonderland. No, I do fear that we are all mad here.”
The mumbling mumbles of the far-off voice. What does it say today? Today, the Mad Hatter has gone off the edge once more, revisiting his old times in Wonderland and prancing among the bright colors and experiencing each new taste and sound. Oh, how the world has turned upside down since the pups were born. Things have been heartily different in his life, though he has no desire to change anything. In fact, he is almost intrigued by the turn of events and he certainly cannot be upset because it is his fault, after all. The massive brute could not contain himself and in that, he has managed to get two stunning beauties pregnant and that has landed him with a whopping 13 children to take care of. Although he certainly does not despise his life as a father, he does miss the freedom to roam and visit Wonderland from time to time.
But he finds his moments, none the less. Like now, for example, as he paces through the forest in search of some kind of meal. The silence in the male’s steps is shocking for his size and girth, but silent he is. From years in the Colorado mountains as a search and rescue dog, he knows the dangers of being too loud – avalanches, alerting local wildlife, it was all a bad time for those on a mission. Although he does not do it now on purpose, he still moves through the forest in silence out of practice and general habit. In the back of his mind, he knows he must be quiet or else any large game will be scared off and his family would spend a day hungry. He must provide.
With the coming of the pups, Hatter has turned into the provider of the family. He can no longer spend days without food only to feast upon whatever poor creature he comes into contact with. Instead, he now has to satisfy himself on one piece of food and then bring something else from the hunt home. Most of his offspring, however, have taken to cannibalism just as he and it is difficult to satisfy so many puppies that have an appetite for the flesh of their own kind. Hatter has learned to put his paw down in those cases, however, and he must satisfy his children and his two lovely queens with deer meat or rabbit meat, or anything he can get his jaws on. Dogs are becoming more wary of the monster that lurks around the shadows of the abandoned fortress. In order to find anything to eat anymore, Hatter must travel outside of the city and into the forest to find prey.
Where he comes to now, though, is looking rather empty. The deer are not plentiful, but he hears the sound of rushing water and it gives him a small amount of hope. Perhaps there will be some kind of animal wandering the edges of the basin, looking to take a lazy afternoon nap and maybe even they will lower their head for a drink, giving the beast a moment to strike and potentially bring something home to his family.
Yes, 13 children and two adult females is certainly a good amount to feed and that is why he has already eaten. Hatter took the time this morning to munch on a fat and happy rabbit that just so happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Although the taste does not satisfy his craving for flesh, it is enough to satisfy a grumbling belly and he has been given enough strength for the day to bring down larger game. "Come now, little creatures of Wonderland, you must come out to play. The Mad Hatter is here with how it’s gonna be, so you must listen up or you shall fall prey,” he mumbles, his voice soft and hardly distinguishable among the rushing water of the falls that he approaches. Although not as talented, Hatter has begun to pick up the rhyming from his White Queen, Malady, who he spends a grand amount of time with. Yes, he knows that she is divine, but she really must eat. It worries him to see how thin she has gotten since the puppies have been born...
Ahead of him, the falls give off a mist, cloaking the edge of the basin in a fog. Hatter pauses his approach at the edge of the clearing, eyes squinting into the fog as he looks for something. Anything. There must be something here for him to bring home to his family. The day is hot and muggy, so some kind of large forest creature must be here for him to hunt. They must come out to satisfy their thirst. He puts his nose to the air and takes a quick sniff, but finds nothing. However, he is downwind of the water and he declares that is good enough and so he settles into the nearby brush, his hulking form hiding easily amongst the living and rotting leaves. He is a shadow, a monster, waiting to strike and lash out at the first creature that comes into his sights.
Now, he waits.994 words.
