Welcome to Cascaro, a small city in northern Maine. Once a highly active seaport, the area is nearly abandoned by human kind, allowing strays to roam free and inhabit lands and territories humans once called their own. Surviving in this city is no easy task; plagued by strange natural disasters, pack friction, and ominous disease, living a normal life here is nearly an impossible task. Step into our world and lay down with dogs.
Risking It All is an advanced feral dog role-play , meaning we have a 300 word count minimum for every in character post. If you have never role-played in the past, RiA might not be the site for you. Once this grand building shook with the sounds of applause, as large crowds of people would come inside to watch the many plays, musicals and pantomimes which were shown every evening. Now it is a desolate wasteland of remains and memories. As one enters the building, the entrance is rather huge with destroyed stalls still standing. Two staircases surround the room and curve inwards to two separate rooms: one being an old prop room with tattered sets and objects, and the other being a large staff/dining area. In the middle of the two is a door which leads to the booth overlooking the stage where lighting and sound personnel overlook the show and run their respective instruments. Back downstairs, the entrance leads to a hall which show viewers once traveled through to reach the stage room, which is still filled with old chairs which once seated the audiences. The room is pretty huge, with two balconies on either side of the wall. Before the stage room, the hall splits and leads to a rehearsal room and a dressing room, both still holding chairs, tables, cubicles and a selection of rags. Sometimes one can still hear the voices of performers and singers on the stage, and the gentle clapping and cheering of an adoring audience of the past.
Sunrise Asylum is a territory few have the courage to explore, though who can blame them? A worn cobblestone pathway leads up to the abandoned home, a large chestnut door left ajar with rusted hinges moaning in the wind. Various rooms are scattered on either side of long hallways, containing beds stripped of their linens with mattresses as hard as stone. Straps dangle beside the beds to restrain their inhabitants when medication and treatment needed to be inflicted. Used syringes and other medical equipment litters the floor, biohazards which were never disposed of properly. For those who needed more intensive care, separate rooms were designed containing no furniture, padding present on all four walls as well as the floor and ceiling. One room in particular is famous in the asylum, for it once contained a man who simply could not be contained. One night he managed to unlock the windows of his room and jumped to his death below, an incident which forced the asylum to close down. It is rumored that his spirit is still present, wandering from room to room in a hectic frenzy.
Once a hot spot for those looking to earn a little extra cash, Cascaro Casino is now left abandoned and empty for all to explore. The casino is a combination of elements: a hotel, restaurants, stores, and of course the casino itself. Large rooms hold slot machines, poker tables, and every gambling devise known to man. Chips, coins, cards are scattered across the carpets, left behind by those who have already claimed their prizes. A long hall has stores and restaurants on either side, providing assistance for those who needed to spend their winnings in a hurry. Restaurants have chairs tipped over and stores have emptied cash registers. The once crimson rugs are not coated with a layer of dirt, dust, and grime. Windows are broken, boarded up by the city to prevent further damage, in case the funds come in to repair the city’s past number one hot spot. An ID is no longer required to enter the casino, leaving it open for any and everyone to explore.
A wooden warehouse sits near the city line, previously unexplored by canines or police due to the horrific secrets hidden behind the normal looking warehouse walls. The warehouse appears normal at first, but explore it deeper and you will discover the past-time of gang members who were once present in Cascaro. A small fence sits in the middle of the warehouse, and upon closer inspection you will find it is a fence previously used for dog fighting. You can see visible blood stains on the fence, as well a hole in the fence where various fortunate canines managed to evade the grip of its attacker and flee before its life was stolen. In the corner is a shelf lined with empty bottles of animal steroids and syringes where the canine owners could buy drugs to inject their pets to make them more aggressive during the fights. There are liquor bottles and drug paraphernalia littering the floor of the warehouse once used by the owners, but now that the dog fighting camp is no longer used for its intended vicious purpose, the warehouse lies unused and a place of suffering that is explored.
Are area where lower-income families used to make ends meet, the ghetto was an area where people and dogs alike feared to walk. Now, one will only find deserted streets and graffiti-strewn alleyways. It is still a location dedicated to crime, and in many of the houses there is residue of drugs. The sidewalk is cracked, windows are broken, the remaining cars are messes. Everything in the ghetto is covered in a thick layer of street art, adding a flare of color to an otherwise desolate landscape.
Weeds protrude upward between towers of run-down cars, weaving between wheels and on some vehicles even beginning to grow around the engines. No grass exists here, as all the plants in the area are either yellow in death or merely weeds. The cars themselves are all laden with rust, their original colorations practically indecipherable through the existing wear and decay. Though there are some random metal parts, tires, and engines scattered about, the majority of the junkyard is full of broken cars, many piled on top of each other without any apparent rhyme or reason. If one can actually manage to find a path into the clutters of scrap metal, it might serve as a decent enough shelter… but only if they can find a way out later, too.
The Cascaro City Zoo is exactly what it sounds like. A zoo. Medium-sized and completely empty, the animals that once populated the rusted cages have abandoned them in favor for the wild, or a zoo somewhere else. When the humans left, they took many of the animals with them, and what remains are the signs proclaiming the name and nature of the species no longer taking up residency there. There are picnic areas, drained pools, empty food stands. For a clever canine, it wouldn't be too difficult to sneak into one of the closed enclosures, where one will find mockeries of deserts, tundras, wild forests, and plains.
Buried in the simmering heat of the desert just past the city is a long-forgotten town that many dogs have never visited before, let alone known the presence of, until recently. It’s lost to the time of the old west, with swinging doors, dirt roads, and a country-western sort of feel. It’s a whole town despite the fact that it lays half in shames, with all the buildings from a sheriff’s office to multiple saloons to a horse stable to a church, as well as a few random houses. But it’s called a ghost town for a reason: an eerie sort of atmosphere lingers here, one that unnerves some and keeps others well at bay. It’s said that half the town burned down some generation ago, leaving it abandoned, but that not everyone escaped. And there have been tales of strange noises, old wagons moving of their own accord, and even a few stories about ghosts walking about at night…
For protection against other cities back long before Cascaro was formally established castles were the only method of protecting humans from outside attackers. This old fortress is one of the last standing from this old time. A tall stone wall surrounds the main castle, stones falling out of place and ivy growing across its surface. There is only way to get past it, and that is through the gates at the front of the fort. Slip past the main gates and a large moat surrounds the main building, though only about a foot of mud is present in the moat. Cross the drawbridge which is on the verge of completely crumbling and you will enter the main building. Rooms vary from the kitchen to bedrooms, to old rooms with assassination weapons and grand dinning halls. And though very old this fortress still has many hidden tricks within its borders, for those who dare to trespass onto this sacred land.
A chain-link fence surrounds a rather large plot of land on the west side of Cascaro. This fence has barbwire spiraled around the top, however the fence is old and barely standing so it's not that hard to find some way in. In the center of this land where the grass no longer grows is a concrete building. This building has a multitude of cables running from it's roof top to a rather large make up of metal gadgets. It would probably be safe to stay away from them. Inside of the building more cables run around, and electronics light up and beep every so often. The power plant is very much still working, however, humans are rarely seen here.
A massive sinkhole protrudes deep into the earth toward the edge of the city, a mistake made my construction workers while they were trying to renovate Cascaro some years ago. A steep, slanted decline leads down into it, landing those brave enough to descend directly under the city. This is the most well-known entrance to the sewers, though there are of course others throughout Cascaro if one but takes the time to find them. The sewers themselves run the length of the city (not including the outskirts), essentially forming an intricate underground passageway that many dogs remain ignorant of. Yet even those who do know about its existence don’t venture there, as it’s a murky, dimly-lit place full of dirty water and pungent odors. Rats, bugs, and other such grime-loving creatures thrive here… though it’s doubtful anyone who isn't downright starving would want to make them into a meal.
The railroad stretches out as far as you can see in either direction, the tracks are in awful condition though. It's quite apparent that if a train were to actually come one day there would be a terrible accident. The decrepit railroad just shows the lack of human care. A few train carts lay scattered across the land around the tracks. They are rusted and barely provide protection from the elements. The building next to the railroad known as the train station is in just as terrible condition. The fact that it is able to stand is just a miracle in itself. The old wooden shack only has one room, and a counter stands in the far corner. Other than that there is nothing in the room but rickety chairs. Outside on the loading platform you'd have better luck sitting on the metal benches, they may be cold in the winter but at least they won't break.
The richest people in town bought the largest plot of land the city would allow, and upon it built this large home with countless rooms, a pool in the back yard, and grand gardens in the front yard. But when the stock market crashed in the late 1920s they lost everything, including this grand estate. The home contains three floors, not including the basement and old attic. The set up is not as modern as it would be today, meaning there are no televisions or other electronics of modern times. Crabgrass grows across the lawn and ivy grows along the mansion walls. Windows are left open with curtains swaying in the breeze. The pool is old and grimy with leaves and dirt discoloring the once clear water. The old paint is chipping and the roof is losing shingles, but the old building has yet to fall.
The once high security prison, where all sorts of criminals with high prices to pay were locked within its walls, received its infamous nickname after rumours of the killings of convicts. Specifically at the end of a noose. Whether or not it was true, it certainly worked as a scare tactic. Long abandoned like the rest of the city, the locks have been broken to the main gate and the fence has been damaged. The grounds are overgrown with weeds but the paths remain immaculate. The insides are painted a canary yellow at a poor attempt for merriment in the institution but the condition has deteriorated entirely, some rooms trashed and raided with a a few rusty bolts here and there.
This majestic garden is no small plot of land, but rather it encompasses acres and acres of land waiting to be explored by anyone willing to pass through the marble gate at its front. Countless plants, trees, and shrugs are scattered about everywhere, from the traditional tulips and sunflowers to rare and exotic species. And along with these plants comes many insects, some more friendly than others. A large pond sits in the center of the gardens with various species of fish swimming within the depths of the crystalline liquid. Paths snake throughout the garden for those wanting to survey the gardens. But without human care many of the plants are wilting or dead and crabgrass has sprouted along the walking cobblestone paths. Sitting benches have fallen apart leaving splintered wood behind. But even with these changes the majority of the gardens remain breathtakingly beautiful with thousands of feet of area waiting to be explored.
If the walls of this building could talk, they would tell a tale of the thousands of people who have passed through the place, of its grandeur and various majestic artifacts on display. Once a popular place for residents and tourists alike, it has since fallen into disarray, slowly at first with the lessening number of human citizens, at last being abandoned and left to rot. Though some of the rooms have been vandalized, many of the exhibits are still intact, including the prehistoric animal room where the bones of bygone creatures still stand, and the weapons room with rows of glass cases housing both modern and ancient knives, bows and other trinkets.
Gilded sands contrast magnificently with the aquamarine hue of the ocean beyond, white foam frothing at the tips of the waves as they roll crashing toward shore. There’s no doubt about it: the beach is a wonderful place. Beautiful, pristine, with sand as soft as it is warm and fresh scent of light ocean salt in the air, it’s a paradise for anyone who feels like basking in the sun on a mellow day. Though the occasional human can be seen wandering about, for the most part it tends to remain deserted; seagulls flock here more than men, allowing it to act as a sort of refuge for strays wanting to enjoy some well-deserved alone time. If it’s people they want – or rather, the food people provide –, they’re better off venturing to the boardwalk lining the back of the beach. On the sand itself, they won’t likely find anything but natural beauty and carefree fun.
The carnival used to come to Cascaro once a year, but the city seems to be its final destination. Rides were put up, and never taken down, such as the Corkscrew roller coaster and the swinging Pirate Ship. The farris wheel still spins on its axis, an eerie creaking sound ringing throughout the entire grounds. The ticket booth still stand, though powerful winds threaten to tear it from the ground. Popcorn, soda bottles, and other various articles of trash are scattered on the dirt pathways, left behind from humans too lazy to clean up their messes. The prize booth is nearly emptied of its contents, most stolen by greedy teens looking for a quick way to earn an extra buck. The fair grounds are surrounded by a chain-link fence, though it is so short that almost anyone can leap over it to enter the abandoned carnival. There are dozens of places to explore and hide; entering this ominous location is only the start.
Wooded areas and forest cover a large portion of Maine, and, like many other cities, Cascaro is surrounded by trees boasting wild animals and unknown critters. Sioux Forest is known to have an abundance of prey and game, but the condensed forest is dark and ominous with little visibility. Even during the brightest of days the canopy of tree branches overhead prevents the sun’s rays from reaching the forest floor. A few pathways weave through the woods, marked by humans as hiking paths. A stream cuts through its center, providing a source of water for canines and wild animals alike. Various vegetation springs from the earth, leaving little room to maneuver through. Sounds can be carried for miles, echoing down the never-ending forest to be heard great distances away. Many enter the forest and are never capable of escaping, lost in the labyrinth of pathways. If paranoia doesn’t kill you first, the wild animals which make the forest their home will.
Hidden far into the forest of Cascaro, is a large swamp. As you venture through the forest, the dark black water and towering trees can be seen in the distance and the dry forest floor starts to become soggy. The trees start to look differently as you near the swamp. The oaks and birch are replaced with towering cypress trees, their moss hanging, giving the forest an even more enigmatic look. The swamp itself has a mysterious and threatening look. The still murky waters, leave one to wonder what lurks beneath them. This part of the forest is cloaked in mystery because the swamp was rarely explored even when Cascaro was populated. Because of this there is no set path to get further. However if one is brave enough getting through the thick bushes and trees is possible and you can see what the swamp has in store.
Founded in the late 1960s will the intentions of free love and an off the grid life style, the Earthlight commune is located deep within Maine's extensive wilderness. The house is brightly colored and decorated with various paintings and murals courtesy of those who have stayed, impossible to miss within the midst of the forest. Within its walls lay various matresses and blankets sprawled upon the floor to accomidate its many inhabitants. Since abandoned, not much has changed on the property except expected weathering and decay. Various fruits and vegetables that were grown on the property still grow amongst the untame foliage and its bright colors, though slightly faded, still appear very much visible and vibrant.
A large spine of mountains looms in the distance over the city, set out in the wilderness just beyond the forest. Many dogs can't survive out here not only because of the harsh weather extremes near the mountains’ peaks, but also because of the number of black bears that roam the range. Danger lurks around every corner and food increases in scarcity closer to the peaks, allowing only the strongest and roughest of dogs to survive; some who thought they could beat the odds have died here, leaving their bones hidden in stone crevices. This is not a place for the light-hearted or those weaker of will, yet it cannot be denied that those who do manage to thrive here are the toughest of dogs.
Back in the day, the Cascaro rock quarry was an active place, with many a man working long days to fish out large quantities of stone for thriving companies out west. But long before the city was deserted, the demand for stone dwindled, and eventually the quarry was abandoned. Left to the citizens, it quickly became a dump site, the humans discarding various things into its depths. Everything from old refrigerators, mattresses to common trash can found in its depths. Even the rusted out shell of an ancient vehicle can be seen poking up from the muddy, tainted water that often lies at the bottom. Entering the quarry is dangerous, its sides steep with rocky ledges forming unsteady foot holds a dog could use to descend. However, a small section is sandy, bedded with only small rocks, but the way down is steep and the sand is unstable. The rocks below form natural overhangs, shelter for any dog brave enough to venture down.
No one is quite certain how they got there, or how long they have been present, but the Abbey Ruins have been present in Cascaro’s outskirts for what must be hundreds of years. Large walls are created entirely of stone, stairways leading up to high grounds. They consume acres of land, some ruin locations larger and more detailed than others. It is rumored that each acre was designed by a different group, for no two areas are exactly alike. The walls have chips and loose pieces of rock scattered across them after decades of enduring the harsh elements of nature. The grasses surrounding the ruins are browned and overgrown, due to the lack of care by human hands. The area is so large it is not uncommon for someone to get lost within the stone formations, alone until another living thing stumbles upon them to receive the same fate. Some walls have already crumbled; others are on the verge of collapsing themselves. One must always be tentative when exploring the ruins, for one never knows when a section will come crashing down.

You have almost complete freedom in this board, as long as you keep it site appropriate: from rants to stories to general games to play with others.
